OMG. Isn’t the number of cases dropping because of the low testing rates in recent days ??? How could they believe those figures

Has anyone actually followed this so called state of emergency?

The government just never learns.

18 ( +31 / -13 )

Another meeting, and more to follow.

62 deaths attributed to COVID19 ....

Yes, end the SoE and see what will happen.

All to get higher approval ratings (Suga)?

All for the benefit of the Olympics?

Who is going to pay the bill if it gets worse again?

Interesting! Tokyo has a little over 300 cases and the government decides to lift the SOE. Melbourne has 13 cases and the whole state goes into a five day lockdown.

The j-gov just seems to think that one or two thousand new cases every day is acceptable collateral damage.

17 ( +31 / -14 )

The latest legislation approved at Diet would allow prefectural governments to manage own emergency measures at will in accordance with local situations.

The SOE upon 10 most affected prefectures is likely to be lifted next week while authorities will be transferred to local levels. I think it's more flexible and effective in responding to the virus.

Overkill, on the part of the Australian government!

In Japan, social distancing is not a reality.

There will be viral spread in such highly dense populations. There is no need for lockdowns just commonsense in day to day hygiene.

Explain Taiwan then. Taiwan is the Gold Standard that Japan and all other nations should be learning from. Population twice as dense as Japan, just 9 deaths. Thats right - 9 DEATHS.

It seems to be all about anticipating the disaster, acting fast, tracing properly and not letting it spread in the community. Just saying "there will be viral spread" regardless, is a defeatist attitude.

Lots of lives saved!

Im sure if you lose someone close to this Virus you be banging a different drum there..

most posts here so far want a SOE & are upvoted.

The few posts that are against a SOE are downvoted.

So many doomsayers here

Thats because they are likely reporting deaths that are FROM Covid and not WITH Covid.

The numbers around the world will eventually be as relatively low as in Singapore when the issue can't be milked for political gain anymore

I'd much rather be here than in Melbourne. I'm so glad we don't have the restrictions that they are doing in Australia. That is insane for this global psyop.

Easy, because Japan will host the Olympics this year, so in order to do that the numbers need to go down, so basically, the infection rate is now all of a sudden quickly going down.

20 ( +24 / -4 )

The SOE, as moderate as it is, seems to be having some effect. Why lift it now with those more contagious and lethal variants out there? Japan hasn't even begun vaccinating either. Keep the SOE at least until vaccinations are underway in earnest. The virus is still a danger. Just check at the number of deaths reported on Feb 11. Highest ever.

Next year! It has been reported that it will take until APRIL to distribute 10,000 doses.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

Doesn't matter to me whether they lift it or not. I try to be careful not to get sick in Japan because I really don't want to put my health in the hands of a Japanese doctor. Has anyone with a serious health condition been to a hospital in Japan? Totally incompetent doctors. All they're good at is saying "there's nothing wrong, here's some medicine anyway". They don't even know what kind of tests to do, you have to tell them.

6 ( +13 / -7 )

Too early and 8 pm shut down did the trick aye? I think it’s the young kids who think they are invulnerable are going out spreading it to elders unintentionally

6 ( +9 / -3 )

daijobu - “Japan's first batch of the vaccines arrived on Friday” - They’re thinking “the ‘elites’ will be fine and so, SOE we can end.”

10 ( +13 / -3 )

@klausdorth

Totally agree. But the number of cases and tragic deaths are reported in the early evening, so there are around six hours before the day’s grim total is in. Here’s a good place to see the previous day’s situation:

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

According to Worldometers, the total # of deaths yesterday was 96. It’s been just under or over 100 for the past few weeks.

Looking forward to the pubs staying open after 8 pm!

Great news!!

No that just tells me people care more about human life than others..

0 ( +10 / -10 )

Are you kidding me? Well, I'll just continue trusting my own judgement. J-gov lacks any kind of credibility.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

It is strange that nobody believes the Japanese government statistics, but they believe without doubt the statistics of Taiwan, Australia, and every other country.

I believe incidences of COVID are heavily understated in Japan. Elsewhere, I think they are being overstated. Okay?

2 ( +9 / -7 )

@northernlife

and what about the lives of people whose businesses have had to close or have lost their jobs ?

oh that’s right, you’re still getting your full salary so you don’t care about them or their families.

3 ( +12 / -9 )

Impeccable downtrend...just in time for the upcoming decision about spectators being allowed or not for the on/off Olympics. Such an amazing coincidence. J- govt sugooooi.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

And the MLIT minister is already talking about Go to. Watch for Nishimura, once he starts talking about it, you can bet these morons will do it all over again.

I don’t believe China’s stats. Neither do many Chinese people.

I tend to have more faith in stats from countries with widespread testing. I’m not in either one of the hysterical camps ( just another flu/conspiracy theory/psyop camp or those looking to lock the planet up ) but widespread testing does help give us a clearer picture of where we are.

Governments everywhere lie all the time for their own benefit. It's very hard to know what's true and what isn't, so I think the default position should be deep skepticism regardless of who is in government. In the context of the current situation, I certainly think numbers are coming down, but that's due to the natal behaviour of respiratory viruses and less to do with government measures.

In that light, I definitely want the SOE to be lifted.

Notice the wording. Attributed.

kurisupisu - There will be viral spread in such highly dense populations. There is no need for lockdowns just commonsense in day to day hygiene

Yeah, and how’s that working out so far? A couple of thousand new cases nationwide every day. Yeah, no need for lockdowns. It’s acceptable collateral damage. (roll eyes)

1 ( +6 / -5 )

A life of lockdowns that don't work...

No thanks!!

3 ( +6 / -3 )

I don't understand why everyone want so much lock down to continue. You people want millions of people life, job, couple. Only to save 1 or 2 thousand very old people ?

More than 1 millions people die in japan every year.

Yes the japanese population is more aware about how to fight the virus than in europe or us. We did not see the same picture.

You think stat of death and serious sick is hided ? so why it does not have any impact on the global death stat.

why we can not see hospital completly crowded with tent on hospital parking full of covid people in serious condition.

It is just politic, just a need to be against government. Something we can find everywhere.

E: Govt to review next week, early lifting of SOE

F: Any of the above being better than what the editor chose

Is that graffiti on the telephone booth windows, or part of the design, I cant tell?

@northernlife

What about them, well what about the people that have lost their lives to this Virus 2 sides of the coin mate..

oh that’s right, you’re still getting your full salary so you don’t care about them or their families.

You know absolutely nothing about me but good try there I take it you have lost your job?

You are right about one thing though, I only care about my family and close friends if that makes me a bad person so be it.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

hospitals remain under strain despite a decline in infections.

So hospitals are still packed and struggling?

Clearly the problem isn't getting any better.

What's the difference anyway?

Life goes on unaffected by any "lockdown" that may or may not (definitely not) currently happening.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Learn from the UK's mistakes, easing any restrictions too soon means cases will spike again.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

It seems numbers are trending downward globally and in Japan also. I hope this is correct and the trend continues.

@Shogun. I think the hospitalization numbers are a trailing indicator so they should fall (we shall see).

All of the debating aside I just hope declining numbers are real and the trend continues.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

The thing is the lock down here doesn't work at all anyways. There are still bars and izakayas opened until mid of night, trains are still fully packed during the rush hours, social distanting non existing (to be fair, that cannot be implemented anyways). On top of that, testing for the virus is non existing, except for the people who are paying a lot of money for that; so all of the nrs the govmnt are giving us are all fake and useless. And yeah, good luck with the vaccine. We, the plebea, we are going to receive it probably next year. If you can manage to figure out all of the bereaucracy, have you hankou stamp all of my number, alien card, passport, tax payments and Familly registration, etc, papers, and send them by fax to the right address and time.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

I only care about my family and close friends if that makes me a bad person so be it.

we do agree on this then. That is exactly why I need to work, to support my family. With a SOE, my work diminishes significantly, as does my income.

Last year I went two months with NO income, & I don’t want to go through that again.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

I agree with tooheysnew!!

Spot on mate!

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

should we be happy???

Exactly! How could people be so naïve!

0 ( +5 / -5 )

People keep on talking about lockdown but Japan never have had any of those.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I have a friend who works in a kuakusho and has stated there is a wait list for COVID patients who are seriously ill but there are no beds available. There are about 2 to 3 thousand cases they figure a day, however, the testing is being done by private companies who are not publishing their details along with the government run testing. Follow Dr. Fauci's advice and double mask on the crowded trains, have your kids when sitting in the classroom put on 2 masks and so on this is suppose to reduce your risks by about 95 percent. Keep safe, everyone.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Glad that Japan is not Australia and we do not have to endure a lockdown every time there are a few cases. These Australian lockdowns do not make any sense. And the tennis open does not stop though the cluster was found in a quarantine hotel used by the tournament participants

Holy Cow! An anonymous friend from an anonymous internet poster. Lets lock down now!

Only 2 masks?? Are you trying to kill people?? When I leave the house, I have no less than 5 masks on.

(Inside the house and alone, I feel 3 will probably keep me alive)

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Ashley... your friend is wrong!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japan is smart enough not to follow the West into total lockdown economic seppuku.
