Oh really? Is there any reason to believe the CDC after all that's happened?

Is there any reason to believe the CDC after all that's happened?

And what happened exactly?

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Already knew that. The CDC is late.

-6 ( +10 / -16 )

Already knew that. The CDC is late.

"knowing" something without evidence is not valid.

The CDC recommendations come based on scientific evidence, which slowly is being collected, even if this is a natural thing to expect an official recommendation can only come after this evidence is clear.

7 ( +16 / -9 )

"knowing" something without evidence is not valid.

Ok, but I have a different opinion.

-11 ( +9 / -20 )

Ok, but I have a different opinion.

Fortunately, science is not based on opinions.

7 ( +15 / -8 )

Scientists are still working to figure out how well COVID-19 vaccines prevent vaccinated people from transmitting the virus to others.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

An "opinion" is not a scientific fact.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

An "opinion" is not a scientific fact.

But it works for me. You nor the government will push me or change my opinion on something I and millions have figured out being outside. All the down votes and insults won’t change that. Now I would never push my opinions on others, do as you like, as for me, once I’m outside, I never put on a mask and won’t, don’t need to where I live.

-4 ( +11 / -15 )

You nor the government will push me or change my opinion on something

Thank you for admitting that you are incapable of changing your mind on any subject whatsoever :)

Oh and, the government can and WILL push you to do many things, actually. Like pay your taxes, respect the law, stuff like that... The government decides what you can and can't do everyday.

2 ( +11 / -9 )

Ok, but I have a different opinion.

Which you are free to have but it can validly be qualified as wrong. As long as you are find having mistaken opinions you are free to do it.

The problem is people that knowingly have wrong beliefs and dislike being called on that. But without evidence to support it there is very little they can do to defend them.

0 ( +9 / -9 )

Here is the Fauci statement for the record. Let’s watch it change as he flip flops day by day.

very intentionally vague, what’s “this this and this”? He speaks in this manner so next week he can say “I said this not THAT....”

The CDC guidelines err very much on the side of safety. So when the CDC, in their recommendations, say you can go outside and do this this and this, and they have a big green color there that says it’s really safe, then do it. And don’t worry about it.

I don't push to change you, waste of time. I also never insult you. You have opposed masks since the beginning of the pandemic more than one year ago. Even though the majority of people in Japan wear masks and continue to do so. You said you wear masks when entering stores if required. I'm guessing your Japanese wife and children wear masks too. The children are wearing masks in schools.

You have also been opposed to being vaccinated. Does that include your wife?

4 ( +10 / -6 )

Fauci

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease official and Biden’s chief medical adviser, still enjoys high ratings, according to the poll. 60% of voters rate his handling of the virus as “excellent” or “good,” while 14% say it has been “fair” and 17% say it has been “poor.” 60% also said the Centers for Disease control are doing a good or excellent job, compared to 54% for Biden and 30% for Congress.

Yeah sorry for Fox fans, but the smear campaign really isn't working at all!

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

Thank you for admitting that you are incapable of changing your mind on any subject whatsoever :)

No, just this one.

Oh and, the government can and WILL push you to do many things, actually.

Not wearing a mask outside or while driving or my home so.....

You have also been opposed to being vaccinated. Does that include your wife?

Yes.

-8 ( +6 / -14 )

Not much to debate anymore. The people who wear masks and get vaccinated have helped reduce death and open up the country again.

Those who do the opposite increase death and make us wait longer to open up again.

I'm fully vaccinated, so I've done my part.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

I don't think your wife's vaccination should be your decision, to be honest.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Jsapc- American polls are fake, as are many others.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

I dont care about polls, look at the words coming out of the man's mouth. One day its "the science" but then when the science doesnt support him, he says "well common sense says...." and forgets all about the science.

But if you do care about polling- One would think that someone who is supposedly an expert at something this critical would have more than 60% approval.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

Do you really think the people who aren’t vaccinated are going to wear masks? Everyone will pretend they are vaccinated.

I think this entire experience has been a great lesson on airborne viruses. Besides not getting Covid many people did not get colds, sore throats, flu, pneumonia and other airborne illnesses. Masks, social distancing, and washing hands has really made a difference! Use common sense to prevent airborne diseases in the future.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

I dont care about polls, look at the words coming out of the man's mouth. One day its "the science" but then when the science doesnt support him, he says "well common sense says...." and forgets all about the science.

Nobody knows what you're a talking about.

But if you do care about polling- One would think that someone who is supposedly an expert at something this critical would have more than 60% approval.

Yeah it's at 74% actually, so it is more than 60%!

1 ( +6 / -5 )

an example headline from January:

"Dr. Fauci: Double-masking makes ‘common sense’ and is likely more effective"

common sense and "likely"- thats great expert analysis based on "the science".

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

Make is simple. Vaccinate, remove the mask. Fence sitters will get it. A few others will not, but what are you going to do at that point?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

American polls are fake, as are many others.

Many other what? Do you mean many other polls are fake or that many other American things are fake?

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

common sense and "likely"- thats great expert analysis based on "the science".

Are you really tring to make a point by throwing around cites without any sources or context whatsoever? Because that's not something I would recommend.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

But if you do care about polling- One would think that someone who is supposedly an expert at something this critical would have more than 60% approval.

Approval ratings have zero bearing on credibility or expertise.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

I think, even after the pandemic we should wear masks in enclosed spaces.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

Blacklabel: an example headline from January:

No one cares. If you don't want to follow the guidelines, your choice, and you're one of the people extending the lock down and hurting others.

The end.

Bass: You nor the government will push me or change

No one cares. If you don't want to follow the guidelines, your choice, and you're one of the people extending the lock down and hurting others.

The end.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

The recommendation is "fully vaccinated" people no longer need to wear masks outdoors. Those not fully vaccinated, or oppose should continue to wear them. Except probably they will not. So now the majority of people will stop wearing masks, fully vaccinated or not.

Won't happen here in Japan.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Love how liberals always say this "the end" and "full stop" nonsense to act like their opinion is the only relevant one.

So should we be double masking as Fauci said? Or has he forgotten about that and moved on to something else?

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

"Dr. Fauci: Double-masking makes ‘common sense’ and is likely more effective"

common sense and "likely"- thats great expert analysis based on "the science".

What is wrong with this? if there is scientific evidence about something being better then that is what should be used as a basis for a recommendation, but in the cases where this evidence is not yet available experience and common sense are better than nothing.

At a point where no experimental or epidemiological data on double masks over single were available it still made sense to recommend it for those that could do it. Data came later to confirm it.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

yet it was presented to me as an indication of such. which I rightly declined to accept as any proof of credibility or expertise. Look at the words he has said and the policies he has pushed and abandoned and pushed again.

Approval ratings have zero bearing on credibility or expertise.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

how about triple mask then? quadruple masks? why stop at 2?

if we are making things up based on "common sense" and "experience" (when there is no previous historical even to have experience from)....lets just go all out.

At a point where no experimental or epidemiological data on double masks over single were available it still made sense to recommend it for those that could do it.

That's explains everything.

By the way, the fat guy lost. Get over it.

Depends, quite a few people don’t wear masks depending on the situation, many bars, restaurants and coffee shops you people not wearing masks, it’s not cut and dry and everyone 100% full stop wears a mask.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

Depends, quite a few people don’t wear masks depending on the situation, many bars, restaurants and coffee shops you people not wearing masks, it’s not cut and dry and everyone 100% full stop wears a mask.

I don't know what things are like where you live, but it's extremely rare to see people here in Japan not wearing masks, even in cafes, bars, and restaurants.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

“Starting today, if you’re fully vaccinated and you’re outdoors and not in a big crowd, you no longer need to wear a mask,”

“The CDC is able to make this announcement because our scientists are convinced by the data that the odds of getting or giving the virus to others is very, very low if you’re both fully vaccinated and out in the open air.”

Good. The data about fully vaccinated people being very low for getting or giving Covid. Fully vaccinated people should be safe amongst other people, and other people should feel safe being amongst fully vaccinated people. Thus, it's just right that fully vaccinated people are provided priority

While other countries are scrambling what do to next with their Covid situations, the US has a straight-forward path now towards a light at the end of the tunnel. There's a lot less uncertainties, but instead a lot more hope

Some US states are even ahead of target achieving herd immunity due to massive vaccinations:

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/01/28/960901166/how-is-the-covid-19-vaccination-campaign-going-in-your-state

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

If you have covid or are taking care of someone with covid, wear a mask. Mask wearing for the general population has almost no effect. Wear it if it makes you feel better.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

how about triple mask then? quadruple masks? why stop at 2?

Law of diminishing returns, big benefit for the first, regular to high for the second, low for the third. It should be obvious. At some point people get a benefit that do not justify the costs.

if we are making things up based on "common sense" and "experience"

This is not makin things up but offering a professional opinion based on valid experience. And again this is in no way a contradiction to use scientific evidence because it is explicitly used when the evidence is not available, and any valid evidence becomes a better basis of the recommendations immediately.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

How is this different from what Americans have done the last year? I've been social distancing from everyone outside our household and only put on a mask when picking up food or groceries.

Seems like Biden pressured the CDC to say the same thing, just slightly different, to get unvaccinated people into the line. I'm not going to complain, just seems like such a minor thing that it doesn't really change anything .... other than people on the same wooded trails will now not feel like they need to mask up when passing other people.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Whatever the bungling and mixed messaging that has gone before, this is a huge step in the right direction.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

If you have covid or are taking care of someone with covid, wear a mask. Mask wearing for the general population has almost no effect. Wear it if it makes you feel better.

Mask wearing for the general population has a very strong effect as part of the social distancing measures because of people without symptoms can still spread the disease, your opinion is completely contradicted by the scientific and medical consensus. Wear it because it helps preventing spreading, even if you have no symptoms.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

its just a ploy to give people hope that if they agree to get vaccination that their lives can return to "normal".

That is the point of getting vaccinated, you're correct.

Once the desired number of people are vaccinated, Fauci and Biden will change the story again. to say that its "likely" that double masks are still needed anyway.

Are you at all concerned that the article you are responding to has the CDC giving the opposite advice?

"out of an abundance of caution" we shouldnt gather in large groups even when everyone is already vaccinated. that Its "common sense" to mask up on planes and to limit capacity to 25% in bars and restaurants.

I'm very sorry that you are getting angry at something you imagine someone else might say. I don't think it's a useful way to spend your emotional energy.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

At the end of the day, it’s not about who is right and who is wrong, and it’s not about one side or the other. It’s about coming together in a peaceful manner and understanding the concerns that are being raised, and dealing with them, addressing, and responding to them appropriately. We cannot hold hate in our own being if we want to rid the world of it, and we cannot use ridicule and judgement against, otherwise we are simply perpetuating what we are trying to get rid of. Operating from a place of peace is essential, it helps to see things in a clearer way, and it’s something that needs to become a necessity for all parties involved, whether you support vaccination or do not.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

blackabel: See it coming a mile away.....its political theater.

To what end?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

We cannot hold hate in our own being if we want to rid the world of it, and we cannot use ridicule and judgement against, otherwise we are simply perpetuating what we are trying to get rid of.

While that is a very laudable sentiment that I wish I could share, each year that passes convinces me that people who proudly deny and reject science (flat earthers, climate change deniers, anti-vaxxers) need to be ridiculed into oblivion. I know it's an extremist position, but lately some people are really doing their best to slow the rest of humanity's progress.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Immunity doesn't just improve with vaccine. also with previous infection. So this single minded focus on vaccine is not entirely "scientific".

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Next stop, name calling in 2nd or 3rd person.

"knowing" something without evidence is not valid.

Like "knowing" that this virus attacks you in the open air, with nobody around?

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

While that is a very laudable sentiment that I wish I could share, each year that passes convinces me that people who proudly deny and reject science (flat earthers, climate change deniers, anti-vaxxers) need to be ridiculed into oblivion.

People just don’t want to feel like they are being lied to in order and to control them. Too many public officials seem to be more interested in control and avoiding blame.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

People just don’t want to feel like they are being lied to in order and to control them.

I agree with this. That's why I don't go to RT, Breitbart, OANN, Newsmax, or anywhere else that peddles falsehoods. There are, however, many people who prefer to be lied to. They tend to visit the sites I mentioned.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

People just don’t want to feel like they are being lied to in order and to control them.

Yeah but how do these "people" come to think they're being lied to? Because they choose to trust pundits, politicians, so-called journalists, bloggers, youtubers and facebook posts over actual experts and scientists. How is that in any way sensible?

One wonders how many virus deniers and anti-Vader’s will skip the vaccine and claim to be fully vaccinated just so they can go maskless.

Therein lies the value of a vaccine passport.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Vaccinations will save lives. 200 million Americans agree since that is the number who have got their first jab.

The biggest group opposing vaccinations are white male republicans. Few are on here.

https://www.scidev.net/global/scidev-net-investigates/covid-19-lies-and-statistics-corruption-and-the-pandemic/

This says that the pandemic is actually worse than is being reported, and that the right-wing Bolsonaro government of Brazil, which has said that Covid-19 is not a problem and that people don't need to wear masks, are wrong and dangerous.

https://www.realclearhealth.com/2020/12/31/dr_fauci_lied_about_coronavirus_281464.html

This article says that we need even higher rates of vaccination than Fauci said to be safe. Do you agree with this article that we need to vaccinate 75-90% of people? If so, why are you against getting vaccinated?

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/01/anthony-fauci-trump-vs-biden

This article says that Trump is an ignorant moron who lies all the time. I'm glad that you agree.

Next time, try working a little harder than typing "Fauci lie" into Google.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Unfortunately, masks have become more political than medical. I am not sure why the guideline says that masks still need to be worn indoors if one is vaccinated though. This really seems like an overabundance of caution. People can and should set their own personal standards of risk assessment and management. Simply put- if you are afraid of catching Covid, wear a mask/masks/hazmat suit. If you are not afraid, don't.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Immunity doesn't just improve with vaccine. also with previous infection. So this single minded focus on vaccine is not entirely "scientific".

The focus on vaccines come from the hugely safer way to adquire the specific immunity against the virus. Compared with the natural infection it has many advantages and no disadvantage discovered until now with millions of doses already given.

Like "knowing" that this virus attacks you in the open air, with nobody around?

That would be like "knowing" this is an argument from the experts that is supposedly based on science, in reality it is just a strawman.

Just a tidbit of reasons why people don’t trust these.....people anymore.

How come repeating a percentage that has been predicted by science supposedly means he lied? His personal beliefs are one thing, but science is not a dogmatic thing moved by the opinion of the people on top. It is completely valid and truthful to say many scientists believe 70% of people being immune would show the effects of herd immunity for COVID-19, some scientists think it may be lower, some that it maybe higher, but this is not something that can be decisively determined at this point. There must be a lot of things every single expert though differently than what was shown with the scientific evidence, but not saying it because they did not have evidence to support their opinion is not lying.

This is specially true when the information keeps changing continuously and opinions must change to reflect this. One person can be completely sure 70% will be enough to see herd immunity when only 5% of the population has been vaccinated but understandably change his mind after seeing the effects at 20% of vaccination. This is how science works.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Jsapc: Yeah but how do these "people" come to think they're being lied to? Because they choose to trust pundits, politicians, so-called journalists, bloggers, youtubers and facebook posts over actual experts and scientists. How is that in any way sensible?

Because it makes them feel special. They know the "real deal." They are able to expose the smarter people. The academics, the scientists.

One requirement is the need to vilify the smarter people. They're always up to something. Controlling you. Tricking you. Can't trust those guys who have devoted their lives to their work. With a few clicks on a keyboard, the doubters can erase decades of work and devotion and feel like gods for seeing through the lies.

Everyone else is just a lemming, but not them. They're special.
