Police said a man armed with an axe smashed the glass doors that form the main entrance to New Zealand's Parliament early on Wednesday but did not attempt to enter the building.
Police said they were called to the complex in the capital, Wellington, at 5:25 a.m. after getting reports that a man had been seen with an axe. They said that 10 minutes later, they arrested a 31-year-old man without incident.
New Zealand's 120 lawmakers are currently on a summer break, and there were few people in the building at the time.
The man has been charged with intentional damage and possession of an offensive weapon. If found guilty, he could face up to seven years in prison.

Monkey see and monkey do.

A copycat mentally challenged person, similar to the emotionally challenged mob in the United States of America.

Look at how ugly that building is.
Monty
What was his trigger to do that?
Face up seven years in Prison???

Hey enough of that! We're proud of our ugly architecture!! LOL
Mezane
Why? It is so wonderful there.

That's your parliament building? It has all the charm and grandeur of a welfare office in downtown Baltimore.
Haaa Nemui
It does the job. But maybe that’s the reason it was attacked. Welfare departments are often the target. Maybe the guy was confused.

Maybe use wood next time...

Parliament building is just an office for politicians, so we didn't see any need to make it all pretty etc.
It's nickname is the Beehive due to the design and was designed to withstand a direct hit from a mag 7.5 earthquake.

What a dumb arse, let's count it down
an axe? Not your usual accessory
seat of government? Probably not a viable target.
mentally disabled confused off his medication
just orderded an axe on Amozon, am I crazy?
Probably. Monkey see monkey do....so true.
Right wingers have a propensity to act out in the most bizarre ways.

@Mlodinow - and it’s also not as bad as these images make it out to be. Although it isn’t known for its beauty, it is an iconic NZ building.

I wonder who "incited" him to do this?
Lamilly
I get it, he couldn't get to the States so decided he'd have his own party with the knowledge nothing really bad will happen to him, just like in the States
Michael Machida
Jokes aside, he clearly had an..... axe to grind?

Monkey see and monkey do.
Yes, and we'll soon see frightened politicians everywhere swiftly taking measures to protect themselves as they are wont to do by "killing a few chickens to scare these monkeys".

he was hacked off at the politicians!?

I do recall the Ameriaca Cup being smashed years ago, in NZ disgruntled mentally deficient Kiwis resort to a hammer rather then the gun. That's an upside.
BigYen
He also did it at 5.25 am, when even the pollies who weren't on holiday were unlikely to be around.
He doesn't sound like a real political threat. Judging from what other people are saying, maybe a disgruntled architecture buff?
Sven Asai
Much efforts to become part of the worldwide news. Usually a senseless tweet , a stupid photo on Instagram or a mental sick dance on Tiktok is equally efficient and doesn’t bring you so fast into prison for seven years...lol
Haaa Nemui
Could be wrong but I’m guessing it was a P episode to be honest. That stuff is rampant in NZ.
Hervé L'Eisa
Are you calling the guy a monkey? That could be construed as a racist remark. It IS true, though, that Antifa/BLM types have indeed been destroying all sorts of things and places, so perhaps this individual was inspired by the destruction that occurred in the summer and autumn.

Where is it written that he is a "right winger"?
Not all "right wingers" are lunatics. Thanks.

Perhaps he's one of the many people who've lost their jobs and businesses due to the lack of aid and the slow action of this government. It would be frustrating to have lost your job and then see Jacinda getting praised for promising to cut her own pay while she sat in lockdown, even though she actually remained on full pay. Or maybe he has a sick child and just heard that Jacinda is cutting funding for a charity that researches children's illness, by half, ($60,000) to the point that it may shut down, but she happily paraded her "love of children" by building a $500,000 playground on parliament grounds. Anything for PR, but no substance.

Breaking a window in the American legislature would have gotten him shot. Nice to see property crimes are not fatal in New Zealand. Try him, sentence him, and find some way to make him pay for repairs.

Good to see the vehicle barriers worked.
Almost anything can become an "offensive weapon." I've used a rolled-up newspaper.
I thought NZ whipped covid? Was he out of work?
Haaa Nemui
That’s a pretty long winded way of saying you don’t like Jacinda. Not very smart to have yourself locked up if you’ve got a sick daughter to take care of though, is it. Why do you think he smashed up the service station in Rotorua? Out of his favorite ciggies?
Joe Blow
What an eyesore!

This is an extension to the main buildings and when viewed has a whole picture it isn't that ugly.
