That country has just been through a lot, so many disasters, terrible.

40 years old. Two refits. Maximum crush depth 500m. Lying in 800m will be like a crushed beer can. Always sad when sailors lose their lives. For those in peril at sea......

When a plane crashes into the sea, the sea is dredged for debris and no stone left unturned to find the reason for the crash.

Even though the sub was not carrying passengers I expect the same all out investigation to find the reason why it sank

Planes have black boxes. Subs do not. A crushed sub at 800 meters is not going to give up much. Did they remember to open the torpedo door before they fired?

Let's see:

"The 44-year-old German-made sub did not have an emergency docking collar on it that would allow a rescue submersible to attach itself and allow the crew to safely exit, naval authorities said."

The 44-year-old vintage was last refurbished in 2011, in South Korea.

As well as old and inadequate it was manned by (let us be honest here) Indonesia, a country without much military pedigree underwater.

What could go wrong?

Sad for the victims though.

So far, authorities have not commented on questions about whether the decades-old vessel was overloaded, b

According to the South China Morning Post, the number of people on board exceeded the recommended limits as the submarine was designed to accommodate only 34 people on board.

Indonesian submarine has been found sunk 850 meters below sea level and cracked into at least three parts, army and navy officials said on Sunday. Rescuers found new objects, including a life vest, they believe belong to the 53 crew of the 44-year old KRI Nanggala-402, which lost contact on Wednesday […]

It's a really sad turn of events. I can only hope that a proper investigation will eventually find out what happened so such misfortune will not repeat itself.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,

To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.
