Oh, really? Why are athletes immune from Coronavirus infection? What other occupations offer immunity?

The occupation is considered relevant since, in a vertically-stratified society, it reveals the relative standing (within the pecking order) of the person being reported on. The victim in this crime was reported to be 'a construction worker' and this gives us an idea of the sort of people that he was friends, or enemies with. Under NO circumstances would I ever go out to drink all night in a bar with a group of construction workers... would you?

Posted in: Man arrested for attempted murder after woman clings to hood of car See in context

This incident of "AORI UNTEN" began on the Johban Expressway when the 78-year old Buddhist priest began to follow too closely the highly conspicuous light-green Jeep with flared fenders and raised suspension ("another car carrying two women") too closely. Very possibly he noticed it was an American-built Jeep. The Jeep exited at the Smart Interchange and the priest followed, hoping to escalate the confrontation but got more than he bargained for.

Posted in: Man who refused to get off shinkansen arrested in Nagoya See in context

JT poster Sven Asai presents a very logical case -- no shots were fired; no-one was brutalized by police; no patrol cars or police stations were burned...and the Shinkansen toilet was still spotlessly clean after the perpetrator's arrest. This is Japan!

Benign, in other words. Gentle and friendly; non-threatening; good with children; all qualities exemplifying the ideal pet and unlikely to render its owner unconscious...

A piece of thin plastic strapped to the 10-year-old boy's head would not have prevented this accident.

"...and monetary tweaking will have ditto effect. Not good at all for those at the bottom."

Ditto effect? The sentence would make more sense if it were written as: 'and monetary tweaks will have little effect', would it not?

No, it is not.

Posted in: Man arrested for kidnapping 15-year-old girl found dead in tent at campsite See in context

"Police said they found traces of charcoal briquettes in the tent..."

This information omits the fact that a 'Shichirin' (charcoal-burning stove) was found inside the tent. Aditionally, the tent had been sealed with adhesive tape to prevent oxygen from entering. Ostensibly, when the suspect exited the tent after "he got ill", he then carefully re-taped the door of the tent to seal it shut...

Posted in: Driver who killed pedestrian during police chase gets 5 years in prison See in context

The Mercedes involved in this accident has been reported as valued at "nissen man yen" (20 million yen) and the woman driving it was not the owner.

Posted in: Woman’s body found in car submerged in Fukushima river See in context

The name of the river is Aga, not 'Ago.' National Route 16 turns sharply left, to make a 90-degree turn immediately before a bridge crossing the Aga River, 500 metres southwest of Ogino rail station. This area is poorly-lit at night and it is possible the driver missed the turn; once submerged in the icy water, it would be very difficult to unfasten the seatbelt...

Moderator: Thanks for pointing out the typo.

Please Note: there are 2 types of 'cooking heater' electric hot plates -- IR (infrared), not to be confused with IH (induction heating). IH type will heat up instantly; has five or six levels of heat; and is very easy to control accurately. Priced very reasonably too...starting around 4000 yen. And on topic, the 'Weber Pulse 1000' is very nice but I don't have a patio, balcony or back yard...
