Japan's actions are NOT reasonable under the circumstances.

Most European countries for example accept proof of full vaccination and one more negative PCR test upon arrival to be free from any quarantine. And actually they will be doing more than that with multiple testing before and after arrival. All participating countries should be put on same level.

Yes, she broke the law, but immigration policy and practice in Japan is seriously outdated, needs reform and humanity! I guess they play it tough because many try to fake again because of the outrageous conditions and because of unacceptable infinite lost of freedom.

The death of this woman is just the tip of the iceberg!

RIP for the family.

As for the kei-cars there are many other reasons to chose one instead of normal size or SUV.

Typically narrow roads make it better for many regions in Japan. Add that many new budget houses in specific regions have parking space only for kei-car (my case).

On the side note - these small cars have surprisingly well disigned interior! I found them more spacious than many normal cars! They are also easier for women to drive and park in cramped space! Of course as owner I have safety concerns but I have no choice!

Posted in: Pfizer vaccine effective against COVID-19 variants in Japan: study See in context

I saw this on the news last night. Even one dose proves to be effective in producing antibodies in 57% of the cases. Less effective for the mutations though.

What's important is that after the 2nd shot all strains were covered with antibodies for more than 90% of the vaccinated! The sample number is low because they tested the university hospital staff if I'm not wrong.

Posted in: Do you think vaccination will be the silver bullet against the coronavirus? See in context

The corona/flu vaccines are different and are meant to be applied every year to have any meaning. Besides they protect not against getting or spreading the infection but on a personal level to fight the disease.

So no, it won't solve the main problem but will help to reduce severe cases and deaths.

"According to the government's plan, the tritium will be diluted to less than 1,500 becquerels per liter, one-40th of the concentration permitted under Japanese safety standards and one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guideline for drinking water."

What a waste! There are countries without any drinking water! At least pump some for washing hands in the toilets !

Posted in: Japanese hospital worker infected with coronavirus after 2 vaccine shots See in context

The point most of the people don't get is those vaccines are not preventing infection - one still has to take the usual measures we all follow (masks, disinfection, distancing) .

As pointed out being vaccinated helps you fight the virus and have mild to non-symptoms.

Unfortunately it doesn't stops spreading the virus. We just have to learn to live with it and be responsible!

Really good game!

Haven't seen Japan play like this for ages! Fast passing without much fooling around.

But their opponent was not in the best shape - all lines had problems and that showed in the result.

The referee should have given yellow card several times to a Korean player that did repeated fouls and even pushing and pulling without the ball.

Vinyl is an old love and I even got an old Denon record player and brought some records from my home country a few years ago. The fact that I listened very rarely that way and moving to a new place were the reason I gave up and ditched everything but few favorite records.

The sound even on the compressed sources like TuneIn or Spotify via Chrome Audio's optical out to DAC is more than satisfying! And I was once almost audiophile - can't believe am saying this...

Like most of other noted - probably the taxi drivers in such cases are not discussing because they try to charge full price per km. There should be different fares (much cheaper) for long rides or negotiable prices for irregural routs. And of course certain type of insurance that the client can pay (only valid credit card, etc.)

Posted in: Every year, a dwindling pool of working-age Japanese people is forced to support an expanding pool of gray-haired consumers. This is why Japan’s living standards are falling behind rich countries with growing populations. This means more adults are forced into spending hours doing elderly care, more taxes to pay for pensions and health care, and lower living standards for the elderly. See in context

I have mixed opinions on this. I found in many ways Japan is not expensive and public health etc. is something to be proud of.

But from a simple human perspective I feel sorry for most of the population. Overcrowded cities, small living spaces without place to relax. People in Europe and US even with lower incomes enjoy bigger living room and at least small garden than 90% percent of the Japanese. It is very stressful life that is accepted as a norm here.

It seems to me the accent in the article is wrong and taken out of context.

The ooint is many talented musicians joined Hoshino Gen and made fantastic collaboration with him staying at home (you should watch the videos).

Then suddenly Abe PM is also there next to him but not singing or playing instrument but posing. And he is under fire in the parliament for not giving hand to the artists who were the first to suffer from the situation with the virus!

All but permanent residents and spouse of Japanese nationals are banned from entering (their visa is canceled including working visas, etc.)

Posted in: Why the coronavirus became a social media nightmare See in context

Let people decide for themselves. We are all adults.

That's the problem. People believe to what they want to hear! Thus it's very easy to spread false information that is multiplied in seconds around the globe by re-posting of believers.

Repeat one lie a thousand times and it will become truth! Whose words were that?

These are the tactics of the totalitarian regimes for decades - first taking control of the media. Now it's even easier for them hidden in anonymity behind the social medias.

RIP little one.

Sure Kei-car is less sturdy but reading that 9 people in 5 cars were injured implies not all cars were K and still people were not protected!

As noted, often back seat belts are ignored despite some years ago it was made mandatory. Car owners no matter the size of the vehicle should also adjust the seat neck protector to appropriate hight as this is what saves life in rear-ending!
