I doubt she is even slightly upset about it

That's not about her. The problem is another ossan highly paid for a global communication campaign (that's what the Olymps are) came out as a vulgar, anachronic, tone deaf, well stupid. He's doing it to Japan's image over the world.

Now suddenly fat jokes at her expense are off limits?

Jokes for the snack have always been off limits at the workplace (unless you work at the snack). You can laugh about nearly anything, but not everywhere nor with everybody.

The three burgers’ rice comes entirely from farms in Fukushima Prefecture.

Apparently, they consider the people that are on a mc crap diet have probably already wrecked their health beyond repair, and are unlikely to live long enough to suffer from effects of radioactive fish or arsenic load in rice.

The law is clear. Illegal to buy sex. Illegal to have sex with an underage.

Neither is true in Japan. It's buying to an underage that is illegal. That's a huge nuance.

Posted in: 43-year-old female company exec arrested over indecent behavior with 17-year-old boy See in context

43...female company board official

As she is one of the few women with that position in Japan, it's nearly giving her name.

She had sex with a minor and she's a pedophile.

Not by Japanese laws. It's not for that she was arrested. 17 is well over consent age, which is 13. She is not his teacher, boss, so a consensual relation can be legal. It's probably "mamakatsu". She paid him, and it's considered as underage prostitution.

Who said anything about sex?

The indecency possibly includes gambling, alcohol, drugs, pornography or that she made him enter fuzoku-rate hotels and clubs, as all that is forbidden under 18.

No Japanese has been convicted.

Hari Nada, Hiroto Saikawa,....

As Nada is not Japanese, you are showing that foreigners are not necessarily treated differently. Now if you want to believe Ghosn was only getting sued for being a foreigner, no fact will ever change your religious belief.

Well the girl lost and lost. They messed her future over BS rules, as for a Japanese, being a school drop out is a red mark on the resume that stays all life. Is it the purpose of public education to destroy every kid not doing the choregraphy at 100% like a circus animal ?

Courts approve that. And the next minute, you get officials saying "How come so many young people kill themselves ? ".

when vast swathes of forest are being destroyed around the world to grow soy beans,

At least of 85% of the world production of soy, and 100% of the type grown in the destroyed forests is used to feed cattle in order to produce meat, dairy, to feed poultry for meat and eggs and even feed farmed fish. The soy used to make tofu and this product, it is usually a rotation crop for growing rice, other grains for human consumption, etc. But I guess you are eating a plant-based diet that avoids soy.

It’s not rice.

It's risoni pasta. Yes, pasta is more processed than brown rice. But it does not get the mercury concentration issue.

It's not the first version made of legume. I like the red lentil ones.

Aeon sells cigarettes , don't they?

My first thought too. Not so long ago, they even lobbied to lift the ban on booze and tobacco sales outside specialised shops and even to get allowed to sell the addictive stuff 24/7 in their kombinis.

Q: "Do employers have this kind of control over their employees' behavior?"

Only with low status 'employees'. When it's a jet pilot, the company is too shy to tell him to not to show up at work drunk.

And this ban on cigarettes extends to 45 minutes prior to the start of working time

Oh fair as long as they pay the employee 45 minutes of additional time per shift.

That's just some new staff abuse. The only goal is to impress bachans with lesson-giving PR.

So, she hadn't been paying for quite some time.

She could get that late in less than 2 years, maybe only one year if there are big late payment penalties. Covid job loss ?

She is still a weirdo. She could have probably talked to the ward about her financial circumstances, 10yr ago and even 1 yr ago and they'd have helped her, either to keep living there or move to something affordable.

Yes, the Times, it's bold to suggest the government knows what they are currently thinking and takes decisions. The situation is they are letting it rot. When it's done like a good kusaya, they'll say that was shoganai.

The chances of success of a Winter Olympics in China event is not a matter of vaccinations within China.

Games occurring, it's technically possible, but that will be hard to forget the Covid cover up, Hong Kong, the Uighurs... so they could get even more boycotts than Moscow 1980.

We should only be responsible for our own health!

You are responsible for not jeopardizing other people's health. Whenever you cause a traffic accident, you are responsible for the consequences. It's the same.

You did not choose the rules. So what ? Japan has chosen driving on the left side, you can't decide you prefer driving on the right side. You can't decide you don't do the health rules either.

Posted in: Saizeriya president calls requests not to eat out for lunch ‘nonsense’ See in context

In other countries, "eating out" has been illegal for months. Here, since March. Only during Summer, they allowed meals to be served on tables outdoor. It is a huge economical problem, I really feel for those in the industry.

But unless some other restrictions , this one is not disputable. Let's face it, most other services can adapt with measures of decent efficiency. But in eateries the limit is that customers cannot eat with masks on. And shops cannot let them in one by one and clean the space after each (like at the dentist's or the barber's).

In Japan, except for luxury hotels that can serve people in individual lounges, they have not the space to really separate customers.

Many tables have to stay free, fever was measured, hand sanitizer, going to drink bar mask was mandatory, all used tables have big separaters and all staff wear masks.

Fever measure is a comedy. Symptomless patients have been proven to be as contagious as others. The virus is conveyed in the air, so unless there is a massive ventilation sucking the air up from over each table and expellling it, the "separaters" are decorative, the air goes around and circulates inside the room.

I didnt see any risk to catch Covid in that restaurant.

You see nothing. It's invisible. You just share the breathing air of strangers during 1/2 hour. So far the infection rate is still low in your town, so you've been lucky. Not protected, just lucky.

Most Japanese restaurants are doing a responsible job of serving the public.

From what I read in comments, the shops still operate bars and buffets, and whatever joke, and get praised for proposing hand wash gel. All those shops with no hand washing facilities have installed some since covid ? Or you find it responsible to go queue at toilets shared by the whole floor ?

I feel very safe in the restaurants I frequent.

They make you feel safe, but it's delusion.

It's 6 distinct rape cases (counting) piling up on his plate. After his arrest in November, his DNA and mugshot allowed to identify him for 5 other pending cases.

Looks like another person on the Carlos Ghosn

Yes, same if you mean, they arrested a dude for one case... then they scratched a bit and found he was a serial perp.

They don't seem to even know what drug was used "a sleep-inducing drug " which means they only have circumstantial evidence at best.

A video of a guy taking away a sleepy victim PLUS her rape kit PLUS her stolen belongings found on him... it's not bad for evidence. At least one case is very solid.

Ghosn is LAUGHING at them and there is absolutely NOTHING they can do.

No, he is crying all day because they DID most of the job.

That dude lost his jobs and money making schemes (so did his sister), lost the huge perks (jet, limousines, luxury houses over the world, security staff, diplomatic privileges.. ), lost his mega pension and all possible post-retirement positions, a huge part of his assets (houses, boats, accounts...) are frozen, he had to give a part (all ?) of what was left to laywers, PR experts, media that defend him, he had to pay a huge fine to get a deal in the US. What more ? He, son and wife can no longer jetset, he and mrs are locked in tiny Lebanon, and it's likely daughters and sister are also restricted in destinations for years.

Drinking milk is awful enough. Adding sugar... ew.

When I was a kid, it was admited in my family that the skin was for me and the liquid for cats or whoever wanted. Note that milk was from my (grandparents') cow Marguerite so it had to be fully boiled for safety.

Now people that buy packs just don't need to overheat and they don't get any skin.

Yes, do that : Male only. The current Tenno has no son and he can no longer have a legitimate one. The problem is permanently solved. The current Tenno is the last one. Enjoy him, spoil him, I dunno, celebrate. Japan has survived the end of samurais, it's the same. When that ends, that becomes a nice history to tell kids "Mukashi mukashi, there was a Tenno that ruled over Yamato... yes, he had a golden car pulled by 17 white unicorns...".

Public funding ends except for the palaces and antiques they contain that are national heritage. Nobody loses as the ex-imperials go with their dowries, plus they gain freedom. The Shinto priests will be able to pick whoever, from the family or not, as next head of the Shinto cult and ask their followers to fund their show.

Maybe for a single guy who only wears t-shirts, but with a family those figures are doubled

No, they decrease with the number of persons in a household. If you need 150 000 yen for your lifestyle as a single, you'll need less than 300 000 yen as a couple (supposing you share your living place and domestic expenses), and kids depending on age cost less than adult as they won't need a suit car from age 8...

school fees for the first year are 850,000 yen.

Kuchikomi always invents unlikely cases. The proud lady would not even make that in a year at the factory.

Currently, those seeking to use morning-after pills need to obtain prescriptions after a checkup by doctors either in person or online.

It's not a problem for women. It can be done quickly in cities. In the remote countryside/islands, I don't know, but if now online check ups are available, that seems convenient enough.

For teens, it is complicated. Now, even if prescription becomes unnecessary, I don't know if pharmacies will sell them and if all the young women can afford. They'd need services that provide it for free. In my country, junior high schools and high school have nurses that can either directly provide contraception (if situation allows it with medical check up) or help teens get in touch with the nearest family planning center where everything is free for people under 18 (as over they have a personal social security).

I wonder what or if they learn at the academy.

They are trained military. They went 4 of them with guns. They should first respond to DV calls with a line of tanks and fighter planes ?

The mad guy happened to be a gun expert. It appears he was stocking weapons in his den. He was very determined to kill. A case like this one is the first in decades.

With Covid 19 people have lost their minds.

Maybe not this one. The perp got psychiatric care years ago. He turned into a paranoiac prepper in an isolated area in the mountains. That was notorious that he was crazy, but you never know to what extend.

I wish him well, for his health, but I wish him out of the job ASAP.

Tuesday night, he had at least 2 dozens of guests at his table up to "later than midnight".

Teleworking is compulsory, not for him ? He does not know of Zoom ? There is a 8 pm curfew, not for him ? Restaurants are closed except for take-out before 8 pm, why is the Elysée's dining hall not closed ? Parties with meals/drinks for more than 6 guests are illegal, not for him ?

a slip up on Macarons part,

Not a skip... a shift of tectonic scale. Don't believe I picked the one case. It's his everyday lifestyle to ignore at 99% the rules he imposes on people. Most of us were wondering if had not already had the Covid without telling (many immoral French politicians have done that).

If MPs and Senators had guts, they'd ask his empeachment tomorrow morning. A problem is Larcher would be interim president and he is just as disgusting.

Posted in: What are the main concerns you have about the coronavirus vaccines being rolled out or which are still in development? See in context

Not sure the order matters.

The first concern is the logistic : no country seem able to supply in enough amount so far, many countries have no plan to get it at all for lack of means. The fastest countries could provide first shot to all population by ...June 2021. And we don't even know if we'll need a second shot after 3 or 6 months.

The second is what part of population can tolerate it due to side effects (could be as low as 50% and people needing the most protection like elderly and persons weakened by a condition could be even fewer to be able to take it).

The third is that the vaccine ends up being as inefficient as the rest (masks, washing and lock downs did fail on Covid... and you cannot say it's not compliance, the proof is now in a country like France the rate of "Winter virus" contamination is zero, which had never happened in history. Science has not yet full understanding of Covid transmission.)

The 4th... well, that counts. We could get ruined at this... and yet create more gadzillionaires in big pharma. That's not as if the world needed more wealth inequality.

I do not notice any protests against beheadings of French people carried out by co-religionists

You don't get it ? The Muslims that find that horrific (the attacks, not the cartoons) are trying to hide in bunkers. They fear that if they express opposition to the calls to hate and murder, the mad crowds will turn against them ASAP. How many minutes would you survive if you walked toward any of the groups in photo here and say "The killings are a shame ! I protest...".

Even here is France. The police and army are trying to protect all churchs/mosques/synagogues... and all schools. But there are still attacks. Now a Greek Orthodoxe Pope in Lyon. Next thing, you'll be beheaded for eating French fries.

If I saw my Muslim neighbors on their way to a demo I'd tell them : "No wait. Stay home. Stay safe. Thugs will come to burn your cars, they'll attack your kids when they go out of school... They'll be doubly violent." But they already know. Particularly those that are survivor of Islamist terror in countries they had to flee.

It's only if everybody else does a demo that they can join safely... maybe. That was the plan to do a special day to defend that teacher in all schools, with all the pupils. That had to be next Monday. But there is Covid, lockdown....
