Posted in: With 8 mil Americans out of work, why are more companies not filling jobs? See in context

Many of those low-paying service sector jobs are not, unsurprisingly, all that appealing to local workers. And it is unlikely those kinds of jobs will ever, without government intervention, pay a living wage. If history is anything to go by they will eventually be filled by recent migrants. The previous administrations policies have put a dent in those numbers which is now more apparent especially in the service sector industry.

Must've had some kind of motivation to walk into a supermarket with two knives. My guess is it was someone with mental health issues who didn't like one of the staff there. Scary.

Posted in: Wages in Japan see 1st rise in 13 months due to less part-timers See in context

Wow. It's like they really don't care about part-timers. And nominal wages for both full-time and part-time fell. Nothing good about that. But, somebody from the Ministry of Truth managed to come up with this whopper of a headline. Misleading.

Gotta love this can. Thank you Cheerio. Power up with lots of caffeine and sugar and defeat your hangover/back-to work blues monster. But does it have that drinkable water from Fukushima to give it that extra special something? Made in Japan so you never know! Just looking at the can is giving me palpitations (I have one now). I know I really shouldn't but I can't resist. I'll down it faster that a JT moderator can delete a post. Too late - it's done. Now, time to test my atomic breath on my sleeping beauty.

Posted in: Up to 300 people per day breaking self-quarantine pledge in Japan See in context

Considering there are around 5000 cases a day in Japan, it seems hardly worth asking people who have been tested twice to self-quarantine. Here is a much better idea. Test a LOT more people in Japan, vaccinate more people FASTER, and stop pretending it's a foreign problem.

Agreed. Totally ridiculous. Subsidizing Bezos whose net worth is nearly $200 billion for filming a series that, unless they totally stuff it up, will be a moneymaker. At the same time filming anywhere else on earth is probably a non-starter anyway.

Sounds a bit desperate. Perhaps a change of strategy is what's needed. Offer to throw in some PS5s and all the Olympic merch they want.

Posted in: Cloudy countdown See in context

They seems to be going into overdrive to sell the Olympics this week regardless of situation with Covid. Medical experts, like those in Osaka pointing to the fourth wave, are being ignored by the govt with empty promises of vaccinations and a safe Olympics. It is a great pic though.

Ship of fools. Sadly they have clearly chosen money, national pride and a stubborn stupidity over the safety and wishes of people in Japan. Idiots.

Can't say for certain but my guess is it will be a lot stronger (and literally bigger and faster) than the Sunwolves. Just need the money to keep hold of the best players. Would be a lot of Pasifika players who would like to be based at home so they can be near family and play in front of their home crowd. Should be awesome. When SR does play there the audience are fantastic. About time.

There is a serious misleading mistake in this article in the second paragraph. The Japanese government should be more honest.

The government is planning to secure enough shots of the vaccine

It should read...

*The government is hoping to secure enough shots of the vaccine*

Posted in: Chinese vaccines 'don’t have very high protection rates,' says official See in context

The efficacy rate from trials was 91.25% in Turkey while only 50.65% in Brazil, so probably much lower due to the new variant. Keep in mind that rate may also be lower for other vaccines with the new variants, especially the South African strain. Still, it was found to be 100% effective in preventing the hospitalization and death even in Brazil. I think that is the most important figure that's getting overshadowed.

I suspect NK will use the Olympics as an opportunity to get attention/concessions by firing off missiles leading up to the games. Citing health concerns somehow doesn't quite fit.

Sounds to me like Putin wants to make anyone who dares to put their hat in the ring know they could be facing him, which could be deadly for them. Russian politics is a bit like Russian roulette -unless you're Putin. He's got the odds stacked heavily in his favor and a medical cabinet full of nasties.

That's very good news. Let's hope this is not false hope with deliveries delayed for whatever reason and they actually can and do get them into the arms of the elderly and vulnerable ASAP. May 10 - May 24, 18 million shots - Japanese should keep the politicians (LDP) to their word.
