A former member of the Japanese government preaching democracy. You have to laugh.

That's great, and forgiveness and understanding are very important. It is ridiculous to expect Japan to change overnight.*

I'm not really a fan of giving Japan a leeway with regards to things like this. They have had decades to change but yet here we are in 2020 with little change outside of those laughable "same sex certificates" (which, by the way don't actual give you any real legal rights.)

Knowing the current government I doubt same sex marriage will be legal here for another 10-15 years but I am glad that LGBT people here are starting to be vocal and I hope they keep on putting more pressure on the government in the future.

Being gay and a foreigner in Japan, having many gay Japanese friends and having a Japanese boyfriend myself, I feel qualified to say that YES, LGBT Japanese people do get discriminated and turned away from housing here should they decide to live together. I've heard of it happening a couple of different occasions from several different people. It's not just foreigners that suffer discrimination.

As I am planning to move in with my boyfriend in the near future I for one am glad that they are acknowledging this.

As a gay person working in Japan, I think I have more experience than a lot of you who are debating about “illogical laws” in the work place despite most of you not having nor ever will having to deal with this kind of discrimination.

If it has no place in the workplace then can my co-workers please stop asking me when I am going to find a nice wife, my type, or if I’m gay or not? If so then sure I will keep my mouth shut. But why should I keep on having to lie or deceive people? Having to feel uncomfortable in my own skin. What if I want to tell people I have found an amazing person in my life? Not feeling like I have to dodge bullets every single time there is a drinking party. Small things that many of you probably take for granted.

Oh wait, that's right. If I did that then I would probably become a laughing stock to most, or seen as "kimoi" by others. Possibly even lose my job in some cases?

But yeah, sure. Down with discrimination against foreigners working in Japan! But LGBT?! That's just illogical!
