Bertie: For the most part any conflict between two or more nation states is considered a war. In Modern times they have been called conflicts so that the nations can cheat the fighters out of benefits. Afghanistan is technically a conflict because the President did not ask and congress did not declare a state of war. This varies from nation to nation it is all about the money in the end

Posted in: 'Put me in jail': Fierce COVID vaccine resistance for Republicans See in context

Free will. People have the right to choose. Also, It is wise to see what the different vaccines do and what side effects they have before you make a rash decision. In America FDA approved the vaccines under an emergency clause and by law can not force people to take it even military folks. This is because the side effects are not fully understood and thus opens up the FDA, GOV and anyone forcing the issue up for monumental law suits and criminal negligence. I support people getting the vaccine and those that wish to wait. Remember tyranny always starts out in the best interest of the people.

Posted in: Tech firm says musicians lose billions to illegal business streaming See in context

The reality is that almost all bands singers etc make their money from concerts and promo work instead of the actual download or physical copy sale of their music. That is why concerts are stupidly expensive. In the mid 80's and prior to that the artist made money from the sales of cd's, tapes and vynal as well as airplay but once the internet hit in the 90's the business model changed. In japan they are draconian about royalties and thus a lot of music never gets heard and thus never downloaded.

Koreans do well in Japan. Honestly in about 45 years Japan will implode and become a haven for expats. The old guard is dying off and the up and comers are few and far between. They will have no choice. I suspect you will see a huge influx of Chinese, Mongolian, Korean and Indonesian people. The Japanese will be a minority.

Posted in: Tokyo’s latest plan to boost birth rate: Pay people 100,000 yen per baby they give birth to See in context

If Japan is serious about increasing the birth rates and stabilizing or growing its population it needs to do what the US has: We encourage unwed mothers to have as many children as possible. We support them through both local and federal subsidies. Then we heap on a huge amount of praise about the struggle of single motherhood. The guys that knock them up are not required to support their kids but we the tax payer will do that. And when the child grows up they can play the victim card and blame all their demons and short comings on society and start collecting money and breading just like their parents. Trust me once you create that success pool of parenting your population will explode!!

Apple had a good game of talk and hype but in the end it is a one trick pony. Everything ever put on an iPhone was already available long ago on android phones. Plus you can add memory with an sd drive which Iphone does not offer. Over hyped over priced. If they are smart they will license the mac OS out. I love it but I'm not paying 1200-2500 for a mac that has the things a 300 windows or chrome based computer has.

Compared to America where hitting cyclist is a sport and juries often side with a car Japan is a safe haven. I have even been struck by a scooter on two occasions; One resulting in limited use of my left arm for life: I stll cycle and feel safe. The only issues I have are with Prius owners who hog the side of the road and take an eternity to turn. nd of course Panel vans AHAHAHAAHAA

Posted in: Native speakers in demand as Japanese schools step up English lessons See in context

The problem with being a teacher of "English" in Japan is that the companies pay is very low. This is because the profit margins are slim. I have also noticed that the companies really try and get people who are desperate for money and pose no threat of walking off the job. I personally have made through the typical three interview system and then never get called. I did some research and came to find that being a retired person and not having to totally live off of what the company pays makes them nervous. I enjoy teaching so I do free community based class and it is standing room only and my school aged students score have gone up. This is because I do not teach under the "Stalinistic" memorize or die principle. I also believe in having fun and poking fun at English itself. I also stress the importance of making mistakes and knowing it is ok to do so. My Japanese id horrible and I will have the kids laughing when I try and speak.

Posted in: Foreign job seekers need better preparation for working in Japan: experts See in context

I'm a retired USN American expat. The amount of time ad energy it takes to become skilled in the Japanese Language and writing styles does not translate into a good or even mediocre job. I am fortunate that I'm an American and I was able to get a comfortable employment on a US base; otherwise it would have been poverty level English teacher. I truly feel for the expats from other nations.

Posted in: Japanese status choice among dual nationality holders surges in FY2016 See in context

I am from America and I am a perm res in Japan. I do not see the need to give up my citizenship for Japanese citizenship. I do understand the people coming from Nations that are at war or have extreme poverty rates. In the end the decision should be made on what is best for you and your family. One can complain about not being able to have dual citizenship but you can also reside in a country that allows it. The bottom line is this is Japan and we are in their home and thus need to respect and follow their rules. Remember you are free to go anytime.

Posted in: Sales tax hike 'obvious' choice for Japan debt woes: IMF See in context

If raising taxes solved the problem then why are places like Chicago almost bankrupt. If you want to save money stop spending it on stupid things like roads to nowhere and ornate birds on crossing guards. When the tax went from five to eight percent it was suppose to put a dent in the debt but instead the Government just used it for other projects just like the USA.
