Ask an average New Zealander to talk about some atrocities carried out by our country. I know you will get a lot of answer. Ask a Japanese person the same question and you will likely get nothing.

In NZ we learn about our history. It's not rammed down our throats but we're brought up to understand we have done terrible things in the past and we need to remember to move forward. To move forward you need to understand the specifics. This history is a part of our collective psyche. In my life I'm yet to meet a kiwi who downplays or denies our history.

Thats difference and the real crux of this South Korea/Japan conflict. The government here will issue an apology. The apologies are EMPTY and never enter the collective psyche of this country, other than that fact that there was an apology made.

Until the negative aspects of Japan enter the national psyche, nothing will change.

I'm absolutely for facilitating anyone who wants to play sport. But, this is the Olympics. It's not social sports.

I think this is a step too far. In the future we may have a fairer way of dividing people other than by gender lines. Unfortunately we don't really have those systems set up now.

Perhaps this will be the first step toward creating inclusive and fair groupings. But regardless, I know when we read the history books Hubbard will have an asterisk by her name. I feel for her fellow competitors.

Posted in: Alcohol allowed but no condom distribution in Tokyo Olympic village See in context

My background is in public health policy.

The BASIC rule is, "make the healthy choice the easy choice".

People are going to have sex. And now they've made healthy, the hard choice.

Giving the condoms after the games is nothing but the Japanese hoping to hear, "wow Japan condoms good. Gaikoku bad. Nippon banzai".

As always pathetic.

I love the, "But. But, China is bad'erer than us." Comments.

Comparing yourself to the one person you know you're better than, and ignoring the 100s of other who are better than you, should be registered as a UNISCO Cultural Heritage.

Yeah China is huge and creates pollution. Doesn't mean Japan shouldn't do anything. Japan burns or buries 3.3million tons of food a year. They waste more than 6.5 million tons annually. They import more than 10 million tons of corn as animal food a year.

40 billion Plastic bags a year.

Worlds leading plastic rubbish exporter.

There are 100s of things Japan could do within the year which would make an actual difference. Things as mind numbingly simple as banning plastic bags.

But it's much easier to just say, "ah, it doesn't matter I soiled myself. It hasn't started leaking through my pants yet and that guy over there looks dirtier than me anyway"

@zichi

Japan has, "done so well" for two and only two reasons.

One. They are east Asian and have faster immune responses because this is where the virus originates from.

Two. No testing

Compare them to other East Asian countries. Given the MAJOR advantage they had with regards to prior exposure, yeah suga dropped the ball.

There was no opposition. Suga genuinely just had to walk over the line. But no can't do that in Japan. Gotta worry about that superior 民度. Got cocky, started show boating, doing his victory dance, then got smashed by corona.

It's embarrassing man.

The Cambridge Research Laboratory of Toshiba Europe made a great breakthrough on quantum data transfer.

Cambridge, as in Cambridge University, as in England, as in not Japan. Tell me how a Toshiba is going to keep this from "falling into the hands of foreign vultures", when it's the "vultures" breakthrough. More like; "I hope the foreign vultures share their breakthrough with the living gods, known to us common scum as, the Japanese" /s

Yet every ignorant, unvaccinated, untested and infested Taro involved with the Olympics will around unrestricted. Naturally because the three times tested, isolated and more than likely vaccinated foreigners are the dangerous ones.

The superiority complex, fear of the unknown, and density of the people in charge here is infuriating.

If you want to make it Japan VS the dirty gaikoku do it properly. Actually isolate the athletes 100% percent from Japanese.

The Japanese "Mindo" (read: incompetence) won't protect foreign athletes from being infected by Japanese people. Take some real action not this GPS drinking BS.

Posted in: Baby’s body found in shopping center locker See in context

Obviously not defending the person who did this; the act is 100 on them. The causes however are more than likely not.

There are no anonymous adoption services is Japan. The old basket drop at an orphanage will get end in criminal charges. (Couple places set up drop boxes and have been threatened with legal action)

Sex education is non-existent. Sexual health services are prohibitively expensive and have some "unique" rules around them.

Postnatal support is embarrassingly inadequate. Daycare, financial support, education, anything. Even just giving birth here can cost an arm and a leg. Especially if you don't know how to apply for and or what financial support you are entitled to.

Once again. The person who pulled the trigger is to blame. But the system which loaded magazine, cocked it, took the safety off and handed it to them is at least partially to blame too.

Posted in: 10,000 Tokyo Olympic volunteers have now pulled out: organizers See in context

People complained about the athletes' support crew being too many.

Eighty THOUSAND people to do jobs most of which a laminated card could do. You've all seen shopping centers here with 5 or 6 retirees getting in the way of traffic waving their flashing sticks. Completely useless if not counterproductive. How many of these volunteers are actually needed?

I've said this time and time again. The real risk of infection here is to the athletes, not from them.

Coming from a country which has covid-19 under control to one which isn't even close, must be a a really hard thing to do.

These athletes are vaccinated, covid free, from a covid free (give take) country. I really hope that no Japanese people infect them and ruin what is more than likely a lifelong dream.

Posted in: Japan wants TSMC, Sony to build 20 nanometer chip plant: report See in context

@Hillclimber

Yeah, nah still not even close. Maybe, "Japan dominates photoresists production in the world and produces the majority of materials used in chip production". I'd give you that

Photomasks, substrate, wafer tech and die tech, none of that is "dominated by Japan". 2016 is a life time ago.

Ah, ok let me give you a hint the T in TSMC stands for Taiwan.

Not annoyed, just a party pooper. I'm not good at sitting on my hands when someone brags about how good they are, when there demonstrably aren't. Like the child in the kings clothes; when I see a naked idiot, I call him a naked idiot.

About materials asides from the photoresists, that's once again wrong.

Other places did surpass Japan and have left then behind. The advancement in this field doesn't stop. Exactly, your analogy is perfect. Japan knows the great old recipes, still cooks the old recipes. Grows the Ingredients and gives them to the exciting new talent to make new recipes.

@A Johnson

Can you tell me which of TSMC, Intel and Samsung are Japanese companies? Tell me a single Japanese company producing 5nm chips... Socionext is planning on trying, maybe. Asides from the TSMC 7nm/5nm and beyond design center in Yokohama there's nothing.

NXP probably even makes more advanced stuff than Toshiba or Panasonic. That's not even considering Hynix, micron, Qualcomm, Broadcom, another half dozen companies that are on the same level or above anything in Japan.

Great, now Kono can whinge and moan at 3 companies for not providing enough vaccine.

Can Japan just give the 70 million doses of vaccine they already have stockpiled to a decent country which actually has the ability to administer it? That's enough to vaccinate all of NZ and Australia and still have enough left over that it wouldn't impact the vaccination rate here.

These prosecutors have an incredibly difficult job.

Under the table deals to protection their mates like finding ways to ensure 3 firefighters, who gang raped a drunk teenager, can walk off without charges.

Working hard at looking like their working hard. Protecting that beautiful 99 and Japan's other safety county statistics.

This woman isn't worth the extra work when a prosecutor only makes ¥19,099,706 before benefits.

Back in NZ something like 80 percent of foreign nationals lost when out tramping are Japanese. They are a tiny percent of trampers too.

Hiking here is normally walking tracks with clearly cut paths, hand rails/pull ropes everywhere, cut steps. Set up in a way that you can go with 0 skill and minimal prep. I've had people astonished I carry topo maps with me. Carrying basic nav kit here is pretty much unheard of. PLBs, never seen one.

Unfortunately they're kind of set up to fail here. If you get off track with no skills, prepared for a day walk, you're cooked. It's another symptom of the cotton wool micro management prevalent here in Japan; when the step by sub step micro instructions aren't there the wheels fall off.

Sad for the families. In a country so prone to natural disasters I'd hope they'd respect nature more.

Japanese so I'll sum it up really quick.

I've been involved with sports back home as an athlete at a pretty high level and as a dietitian at the professional level.

You would be astounded by the number of people NEEDED to support an athlete. Not providing/allowing that's is a HUGE disadvantage.

It would be like making and F1 driver get out and do the pit stop themselves.

"in light of recently public backlash at the Olympics we have been thinking deeply. We want to try and appease the public while not biting the hand of the politicians that feed us. As such, we believe the best response is to side firmly with the politicians and let our PR dept put out some fluff about being conflicted. In Japan we understand words are louder than actions (in fact it's impossible to hear actions, maybe some windy sounds? Not strong at all) so we will make these empty statements as loud as we can. With the rest of the pi**ing contest, who cares? I couldn't name more the 10 Nobel Laureates. 90 percent of them were individuals, nothing to do with their country's efforts. The nominees and nominators are kept secret for 50 years for a reason too.
