Wait, I thought NZ was “beating” the virus?

No cases in 5 days, and few cases in the last year, yeah, I think they're doing an amazing job.

Lockdowns don’t work in the long run, as this shows.

That is so opposite to the reality. Ans a Kiwi if they think it was worth it.

I show a program of this and the Japanese who died were students studying English and the school, that had been shoddily built crumbled. The buildings on the left and the right were intact, having been built by professionals. It's unacceptable that a quake-prone NZ should have such shoddy building standards without any repercussions for the guilty party

NZ does have very strict earthquake-proof construction laws but unfortunately, this building was built before there introduction and had not yet been tested.

No masks?

Are they 100% certain no asymptomatic positives in that crowd?

Did every single person get tests?

There is no coronavirus in NZ (except in isolation facilities at the border). Aren't they lucky!

Please refrain from reporting on suicides. Go check the stats for copycat suicides - it will alarm you.

Many countries (e.g. NZ) ban such reporting for this reason to reduce suicide rates

Why is this story even necessary except for clickbait and morbid curiosity.

New Zealand dodged another bullet it seems. For all the praise the Ardern government gets, they have been extremely lucky.

Honestly if I have to listen to her use words like 'be kind', 'the team of 5 million' and so on, again, I will be severely ill.

Hmm, you could call it 'luck', or you could call it good leadership, organisation, hard-work, public trust and compliance. Either works for me. ;)

No, NZ is not going to extend the lockdown. Most of NZ will be Level 1 and Auckland at Level 2 (pretty much life as usual except the usual contact tracing).

Either you don't live in Japan, or you haven't been out much. Business as usual here in Japan.

It is not normal when you are living under the threat of contracting a deadly virus every time you go out and you have to wear a mask and avoid large social gatherings.

BigYenToday  08:10 am JST

Not all crime is being recorded, some even being dismissed during reporting... Also not all crime is being followed up in Japan, from Japanese corporate crime scandal to stalker.

There would not be a single country on the entire planet where all crime is being recorded, and all crime is being followed up. Japan has a low overall crime rate when compared to other countries, reported or not.

What is 'other countries' - the entire world?

There are several lower crime countries than Japan, and it depends on the type of crime. Japan would have one of the highest sexual assault rates in the world given the massive chikan problem that goes largely unreported.

WolfpackToday  06:54 am JST

The insanity of ideas like universal basic income is truly breathtaking - even without the pandemic induced global recession. Nothing good can possibly come from disincentivizing work. As a general rule of thumb- if you don’t work you don’t eat.

Hair-brained ideas like this further shifts the labor burden onto fewer and fewer people leading to a shrinking tax base, resentment, and related social maladies. Enough people are perfectly willing to exist on subsistence levels of income to destroy growth ensuring a permanently declining standard of living. It’s happening already in Japan because of widespread social welfare policies, a large national debt and an aging society. This idea will help to greatly shrink the middle class. It’s stupid. Don’t do it.

Are you sure that being given a UBI will cause you to not work? Perhaps that is your personal projection since the evidence (from places where UBI has been trialled) shows that people want to work and contribute period.

People criticize the government and leaders. But whoever becomes a leader, the situation will not be a big change. True reason of the confusion is that we do not have a cure medicine. Locking down is the last resort we can do and that will cause a large economic disasters. Capitalism economy is weak in that regard.

NZ had a very strick 7-week lockdown and no 'economic disaster' and all back to normal ever since. They simply decided lives were more important than money.

I have stated over & over again - social media will be the downfall of our society.

I wouldn’t shed one tear if it was banned.

Then something else will take it's place that can be abused. Social media also brings people together.

Instead of trying to eliminate everything that has the potential to create bullying instead teach resilience and self love to our young people.

Suicide is never the result of external actors, it is the result of unhealthy thinking patterns and a lack of coping strategies

Are you a psychologist to reassure that?

Do you know how important for such early stages of human being, children and teenagers, is to have a "good environment" in which you grow yourself enough confidence cuz you feel protected and loved in this world? Kinda "I've a safe space here somewhere to go..."

I believe this must be tackled by 2 sides, one is like you've said, invest on mental health awareness. The other one should be teaching at schools and homes that undermine and bully someone is never an option. That's simply can be called a violent act, in Japan, in Papúa Guinea or Brazil, e-ve-rywhere! And such acts could be taken to the justice.

Cooperation above competition, no? ....

There's so little social and emotional education in this world.... That's why there're many irresponsible adults living in society.

RIP to Noa Tsukino.. . She deserved to be listened and contemplated. I don't wanna talk on how japan still lacks of a psychological assistance

I agree efforts should be made to stamp out bulling, but you may never stop all bullying. You can however teach children to cope with it, and any other difficult things in their lives.

OssanAmericaToday  12:33 pm JST

Germany has never addressed, apologized or atoned for it's own Military Prostitution System. There are no statues or memorials for the victims.

"According to records, at least 34,140 European women were forced to serve as prostitutes during the German occupation of their own countries along with female prisoners of concentration camp brothels. In many cases in Eastern Europe, teenage girls and women were kidnapped on the streets of occupied cities during German military and police round ups called łapanka or rafle."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_military_brothels_in_World_War_II

Berlin is hardly is a position to host this statute.

So for a nation to allow a statue of a crime against humanity it must first atone for every single 'crime' it committed according to you. Got it. I guess that means no statues will ever go up and such crimes will never be remembered which I'm guessing is what you hope for. Or is it just the statues recognizing crimes committed by Japan that aggrieve you.
