And just to add a further random 3600 tests of office workers in Hiroshima conducted last week produced 0 positivestI . Itwas announced today
Good for Hiroshima if it was truly random testing and this was the result.

Oh wait... it conveniently
It didn't happen because of local furry over the cost to taxpayers. Only 3000 people applied to be tested. 5 positives were recorded
Was the local fury perhaps " nudged along " by your local friendly LDP chapter? Funny how " people" are furious " about mass testing yet blatant pork waste of money such as the Abenomask fiasco, does not generate such reaction?

Great to see and vindicates the way Japan has tackled the pandemic.
Indeed... low testing results in low cases. Superb. Coincidentally, just in time for the looming Olympic spectator decision. Japan,s unique approach deserves to be nominated for UNESCO listing soon :)

China, India and Russia are stepping up efforts to expand their influence by providing coronavirus vaccines to developing and middle-income countries, while advanced countries scramble to secure doses of U.S.- and European-made vaccines for their own citizens."
So whats wrong with that...? Should the "developing and middle income countries " reject the Chinese, Indian and Russian options in favor of waiting for a "friendly Western democracy vaccines" despite their supply delays and let their populations continue to get sick and die in the meanwhile?...Are we all supposed to dislike anything coming from Russia, China etc because our "democratic" politicians and press tells us so? Pathetic.

“we must always do it our own, unique, Japanese way.
Which is basically to sit and ponder and repeatedly use words like “promise”, “urge”, “considering” and “vow”. A joke, basically.
Amen to that .

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga denied Friday that an ethics scandal involving a senior press official had anything to do with his decision not to hold a news conference
BS...pure and simple.
Then again that's Suga,s usual mode of operandi.

LOL. I can picture it now. 78 year old volunteer Jiro, wearing high viz, in hot pursuit of a group of Kenyans who have gone rogue and ducked into a souvenir shop on the way back to the athletes village.
Damn, now I can't get that image out of my head, LOL...

group of LDP lawmakers sent a written request to the members, the sources said. The group also includes Tamayo Marukawa, who recently took over as minister in charge of women's empowerment and gender equality.
Great, the one little step forward for equality taken with appointment of Hashimoto as an Olympics boss , has just been taken back to square one by these LDP clowns still living in Showa era. That the group includes the new " minister for gender equality " is a real kicker. Thanks for making yourselves world,s laughing stock again dear LDP, well done.

So why did fewer Japanese die during the pandemic? Good Government! Those are the facts!"
LOL...good one...if anything it would have to be "despite the J-govt. mumbling. Fact.

Births at a record low....guess we can expect another round of konkatsu matchmaking services organized by 70 year old local govt offcials on taxpayer dime to ya know " encourage " the singles to meet opposite sex...because if it doesnt work..lets do it again. Who needs financial support for families and childcare hey?

not good for NZ's youth. I suspect once things get back to normal that many of them will be bound for Australia, London or elsewhere.
Aussie housing bubble is just as bad...its insane.

It’s the year 2021 yet we are still fighting for gender equality....."
When it comes to gender equality its like 1921 in Japan....actually , not just gender equality.

it's 7.3 billion. 73 Mill for an app would be still too expensive, but this one, 100x times more expensive takes the cake.
I think he is talking cost in USD.

Solutions to get Takeshima back: America is the key.Key part in getting Takeshima back.
Just to clarify -is this the same America you love to bash in all the other posts when diverting focus from Japan,s shortcomings ? Suddenly they are the key and should solve this for Japan?
So, the US military which occupies Japan did NOTHING when South Korea attacked and took over the islands.
So, US military should attack an ally over some forseaken rock so that uyoku dreams can be realized? Good idea.

Just wait and see how China will track you! Every visiting foreigner is assigned a chinagirl escort.
Cute chinagirl ? great. Where do I book a ticket?

It will be compulsory for visitors to the Tokyo Games to possess smartphones and also have the app installed. In return, they will in principle be exempted from 14 days of quarantine and be free to use public transport.
7.3 billion....nice pork... and if one asymptomatic foreign visitor forgets his phone and catches a train for a night out , it all goes out the window.

All this noise so that right-wing politicians on both sides can whip up the nationalist,s feelings and keep their votes which equals power and money for them. Meanwhile average Taro and Keiko don't care about a few sea rocks as they are busy putting food on the table in a flatlining economy. Priorities.

Considering only those with symptoms are getting tested, a few hundred out of a few thousand tests is not very high.
Yes we'll, that has always been the problem here hasn't it...one has to have serious symptoms for a period of time before they can get a free test, unlike other " developed" countries that conduct widespread testing to truly grasp the spread. So all the light symptom and asymptomatic cases are slipping through here. But that's OK as long as Japan " beat the virus" and " safety Olympics can be held....as we know the final decision is due in March.

We're bound by the law to use the stockpile only in the event of a supply shortage in the market, or for the purpose of'food education.' We can't use it for welfare," said an official for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). "This is the extent of what we can do."
Perhaps the ruling LDP politicians could spare a few hours from their super busy hostess club and high end restaurant checking schedules to get off their ass to amend the above mentioned law. It's kind of their job that they get overpaid handsomely for from our taxes.

Japan is obsessed with the Unesco list, I don't know if it's inferiority complex or delusions of grandeur.
Spot on..bit of both I guess.
Japan petitions to add 40 traditional folk dances to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list
Common ..only 40? You can do better than that, at least a hundred...
Next I nominate Japan,s obsession with UNESCO listings for a listing, along with Suga,s combover hairpiece technique.

Hashimoto made even more history on Thursday in Japan, where women are still rare in the boardrooms and positions of political power.
Ok..a female Olympics boss, score .... 21st century -1, Showa geezers 0.
Would be good if this was a startnof meaningful change in this place but won,t hold my breath...TIJ.

Interesting headline. Is Japan the only country that is "late"? Lets see:Australia will start next week: I wonder why Japan is getting flak when other countries are doing exactly the same thing. Double standard?"
You conveniently forget to mention Australia as one of the most successful countries has covid pretty much under control ( unlike Japan ) with a handful of cases despite massive testing that dwarfs Japan,s "efforts". They can afford to be "late". Double standards much?
