Glad to see I am not the only one that feels this is done on purpose to make people angry.

@NOMINATION

This is a miracle baby to be thrown out of a 2nd story window and have non life threatening injuries.

It is very fortunate, but newborns are much more resilient than what you would expect from them, in the middle of tragic news about violence and accidents many times you can read babies getting away with very serious things.

How about just giving up on the olympics and using the money for this purpose?

What is the value of having just one more of these articles when they are saying the same things as always? it is not like you have to do things differently from a decade or two ago, and also it is not like you have a sudden influx of foreign tourists right now that don't know how to behave in an onsen.

How bad it has to get to consider 3 lethal victims and 2 injured ones "not so bad" in comparison...

Posted in: Tokyo reports 543 coronavirus cases; 1,220 in Osaka See in context

Getting tired of waiting for the supposed higher number of tests promised, optimistic me still was expecting the numbers to ramp up on the next wave, but we are already on it and still less thank 10k per day for Tokyo, disappointing.

Posted in: Japan to procure enough COVID vaccines for all eligible by end of September See in context

I really wish this was true, but I know better than to expect anything done this year, maybe even next. Now they are preparing to cancel the games, so there is even less incentive to vaccinate people.

On the other hand, reading the comments here it is obvious a lot of people are making an effort to instill fear of vaccines as if they were not already proven safe. Maybe if enough people believe the lies (it may cause cancer, it killed the experimental animals, they are not approved so they are not safe, etc.) the easily manipulated people can leave enough of the current vaccine for those that are rational enough to know better.

Posted in: Swiss to vote on whether to ban full facial coverings in public See in context

So weird to be reminded like this of how different the culture and values of the countries of the world are, something that would be unthinkable in some countries is even something openly voted upon in others.

Posted in: Tokyo experiences drop in population for 7th consecutive month See in context

As mentioned before, this is not something happening only in Japan, people don't fall so easily for the appeal of big cities anymore, I just hope the trend last long enough to make a difference.

Posted in: Do you think film awards like the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys and so on will eventually go "gender neutral" and replace Best Actor and Best Actress awards, for example, with Best Lead and Best Supporting Lead, or something like that? See in context

Hopefully the whole thing is going to lose its appeal and become irrelevant soon, like its happening with Miss Universe, maybe then a system for true recognition of talent may appear.

Posted in: Aging low-ranking employees fear they can't survive restructuring See in context

I can understand the situation is bad for the people on the article, but personal friends that have to survive with 3 mil a year and huge stress because their jobs are not permanent from the beginning puts another perspective on it.

Posted in: SoundCloud to be first music app with 'fan-powered' artist payments See in context

Interesting idea but still out of my interest, internet radio and free streaming to find new music and buying it on hard media is still much better for me.

PCR cycles?

the virus never been isolated?

Herd immunity around the corner?

Since when the comment section became a collection of debunked lies? Sad to see what is being allowed to be repeated here without having any relevance to the content of the news article.

At least the votes say that the users have a better idea of which comments are rubbish.

Stories like this help a lot, not only because they inspire but also because they help reminding the tragedy that is still ongoing to this day.

Posted in: In light of concerns about a spread of variant strains in the future, another state of emergency may well have to be declared during the national holidays in May. See in context

To be honest I am still undecided to be onboard with the olympics or not, but a SoE on May would be the final stone in its grave, there is no way the games can be held after that (or worse, if the games have to happen there is no way May will have an SoE).

Most of the things look promising, but I keep getting a weird vibe about the focus on face recognition, seeing how deeply unreliable it still is, and how much privacy problems derive from it, I am not sure I like companies and governments putting so much stock in it.

Posted in: A Japanese government panel has proposed amending the juvenile law to put 18- and 19-year-old criminal suspects on trial as adults. Do you agree with this? See in context

It is good that the possibility is now open, but only as long as age is still a factor to show clemency for minor problems, we all need to be able to make some mistakes to be able to grow, I would hate for this to be the excuse for ruining the life of a kid for something stupid but without real victims.

It does strikes me as very lenient sentence but I really hope the judge has good reasons for this, I would hate to see the kids again on the news.

Posted in: Pfizer, BioNTech start combined trials of COVID-19 vaccine candidate in Japan See in context

@neowave

Prof. William A. Haeltine

Professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health

I really hope the professor never get to read how you use his valid (if exaggerated) worries just to somehow prove that vaccines inevitably be bad. That is not what he is saying, and the guy is a very vocal supporter of vaccines in general, and do think that vaccine hesitancy (or more specifically antivaxxers) are a huge problem for public health.

Too late and too little, the political environment in Japan is still bad enough for people to think they can express such ignorant opinions without any consequence.

Posted in: Suga, in Indonesia, says Southeast Asia key for Japan See in context

This is terribly obvious for anybody putting any kind of attention, but hearing Suga expressing it feels strangely ominous, like someone saying that cooperation between neighbors is necessary to keep the streets safe, (and just before putting forward himself as the person in charge of doing it)

Posted in: Police officer caught downloading dirty videos from suspect’s phone See in context

@Bungle

Had he used his own phone to film the confiscated phone, no one would have been any the wiser.

Filming in the toilet a video that may be more than an hour long or that has an appealing sound? not exactly discreet, specially compared with a couple of minutes of electronic transfer. Not to talk about a huge downgrade of quality. It is not a realistic option except on very limited cases.
