Posted in: Domestic violence cases in Japan hit record high in FY2020 See in context

I get that staying at home can be stressful. I get that you can get on each other's nerves. But there is never any excuse for being violent toward the person you share you life with. Those who do are the scum of the earth.

Obviously, the Beijing games will not be revoked, but I like this move, it's important to call attention to China's atrocious human rights record.

Posted in: Hong Kong activist Agnes Chow thanks Japanese for support See in context

What is going on with all the downvotes for comments praising Agnes Chow and criticizing China? It sure seems like the Chinese governments has mobilized its 50-centers and nationalists to downvotes any disapproval of China. On other RikiWeb articles on democracy, you never see such systematic downvoting of pro-democracy comments.

Agnes Chow, just like Jimmy Lai, deserve our support. All they have done is express their support for freedom and democracy. But the Communist Party of China is so worried about free speech that it can't stand its views being opposed.

Cleo couldn't be more right. If in 2020, with all that we know about its consequences on your health, you start smoking, you truly are an idiot.

I am so relieved about this news. Given the Zepeda family's close ties to power in Chile, I was afraid the suspect would have been shielded and his extradition would never come. I just hope the body is found and they can get the killer behind bars, whether it's Zepeda or not.

Posted in: The customers Japanese convenience store clerks hate the most See in context

For a country renowned for its politeness, I am always amazed by the lack of "hello", "please", "thank you" uttered by customers. I'd say 75% of customers don't say a word when they get the cash register. The clerks are not animals, I don't understand how you can ignore this basic decency.

Posted in: Mass killings in U.S. hit new high in 2019; most were shootings See in context

It's frankly mind-boggling to see people arguing that "Best thing to do then is to buy a gun to protect yourself." Really? Don't these people look at statistics? Don't they see the US, with one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world, has a ridiculously high gun death rate, as opposed to countries with fewer guns? There's a direct correlation: more guns = more deaths. But sure, let's just arm everyone (eye roll)

Posted in: How many hours a month do anime artists work in Japan? Survey finds crazy number, unhappy workers See in context

oldman_13Nov. 24  02:09 pm JST

Grueling 11.5 hours per day?

I do that six days a week, at a job that is most certainly a wee bit more demanding physically than sitting at a desk and doing animation.

--

Really? I don't know if you're a foreigner or Japanese (I'll assume foreigner), but why on earth would you accept such a schedule? That's not a life! That's worse than those animators, who certainly have at least my sympathy.

As a matter of principle, I am against the death penalty, but in this case, I simply can't help but feel that the killers of that poor girl are getting exactly what they deserve.

Posted in: K-pop star arrested for filming and sharing sex video See in context

It's a sad and disgusting story, but I won't be too disappointed if it hurts the K-pop industry as a whole. I'm very open-minded when it comes to music, but I find k-pop so tasteless, soulless, just a pale imitation of American pop for the most part.

Posted in: Dowdy no more: Men in suits storm back into style See in context

I agree with all those who say these suits are too baggy. A nice, tailored, snug/slim fit always looks great on any man. When I'm on the train in Japan, I always find that at least 80% of suits are terrible. Men usually wear suits that are way too baggy. Japanese women are so much more tasteful in their sartorial choices.

Posted in: China protests to Japanese media over report on Taiwan See in context

The world must stand up to China and its bullying. These sorts of incidents are becoming increasingly common, with China not merely content with stifling the freedoms of its own people but also trying to do the same abroad. All countries and people who value freedom and democracy have to band together, not to "contain" China, but to send a much clearer message that its tactics will not be tolerated.

The way Beijing has recently acted towards Taipei is despicable. It has taken allies away from Taiwan and actively worked to reduce its valuable voice on the international, for instance when Taiwan's observer status at the WHO was withdrawn last year. Not to mention China using its economic might to compel countries to heed its interests and to punish countries that have taken measures deemed detrimental to or critical of China (see the THAAD issue with South Korea).

Posted in: Abusive messages show dark side of 'Star Wars' fandom See in context

As a male Star Wars superfan in my 30s, those loser misogynistic sexless fanboys infuriate me. I'll never understand why such insecure losers will go to such great lengths to troll and mercilessly harass female actresses whose characters they didn't like. They make society a much worse place. Go get laid already. I feel for Kelly Marie Tran and other actresses who have gone through that.

Posted in: Do Japanese people kiss on the first date? Survey investigates See in context

Interesting. To each their own, but why in the world would anyone wait until the THIRD date to kiss? I mean, if you're both into each other, why wait? I almost always kiss on the first date, which happens on 90% of my dates.

And what about those 184 people who wait until marriage? Are there really such people in Japan? I honestly thought this was reserved for a few ultra-conservative in American evangelical families...

"Tax payers : get your wallets ready."

That shouldn't be an issue. Country leaders do foreign trips all the time, and it's no less important for a major country like Japan to do the same. Move along.

Your comment makes no sense. The US is worse than NK and China? Today, in 2018, US is, despite its flaws, much better in terms of human rights than the list of countries included in your quote. You need to get better informed...

Posted in: Cambodia opposition leader seeks Japan's help in fair election See in context

Sam Rainsy says that "If Japan withdraws, Hun Sen will be totally isolated and Cambodia will be really in trouble." While I appreciate the sentiment and am as concerned as he is about Cambodia's rapid turn towards dictatorship, this is simply not true. China will always be there to shore up the Hun Sen regime. Sadly, China is completely unscrupulous when it comes to supporting brutal dictators.

I've long wondered, if a Japanese male applicant shows up at a job fair or interview impeccably dressed but, lord have mercy on him, with a non-black suit (say a nice grey suit), what happens? Will he not get the job because the poor guy boldly stepped out of line?

@goodlucktoyou, " NK has never attacked or invaded another country"??? You need to review your history. North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25 1950. They committed several acts of terrorism, including blowing up the Korean Air flight 858 in 1987, shelled the South Korean island of Yeonpyeon in 2010 and blew up the South Korean corvette Choenan.

How can you be so blind to facts?

Posted in: Philippines' Duterte to skip regional summit in Australia See in context

Rodrigo Duterte and Hun Sen are ridiculous thugs, both of them. Duterte places no value on human life and Hun Sen places no value on the basic human desire for freedom. What Duterte has done in the war on drugs and what Hun Sen has done to silence opposition is beyond shameful.

Yes, Sen, just try to beat up protesters as you promised...

Posted in: Japan donates ballot boxes worth $7.5 mil for Cambodia election See in context

What is happening in Cambodia is a real shame. While it was never a full-fledged democracy, it was a much freer country 10 or 15 years ago. Now aided by Chinese money, Hun Sen has become a full on dictator, and his regime is now arresting journalist, opposition politicians and simple citizens for making critical comments against him. A real shame.

Also a shame that Japan is supporting this, but strategically speaking, it's also completely understandable that it doesn't want to leave the country in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.

Posted in: Tokyo to host 2-day TPP talks from Monday See in context

China has more freedom than Japan. In Japan, we can't say certain things.

Akie, this is a patently false statement. On every indicator, such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, political freedom, economic freedom, religious freedom, and many more, Japan is freer than China. That is not to say that Japan is perfect of course, but let's not entertain the delusion that China is more free than Japan.
